Bates County Museum
The Bates County Museum houses an extensive collection of artifacts dating back to 1821 when Harmony Mission (first settlement in the county) was established.
The Civil War display has a dramatic collection of murals depicting the Battle of Island Mound, the Burning of Bates County under Order #11 and General Joe Shelby who is known as “the General who never surrendered.”
Butler is the birthplace of world-famous science fiction writer, Robert Heinlein. There is an extensive collection of Heinlein memorabilia at the Museum.
The building and grounds were originally the Bates County Poor Farm. The grounds also house two one-room school houses currently under restoration.
